The cover of your book is the first thing a potential reader (buyer) will see. Therefore, it needs to attract immediate attention, stimulate interest, heighten the desire to learn more about the book’s content, and create a clear call to action (which may something as simple as turning the book over to read the “selling copy” on the back cover!).
So, creative cover design and professional execution may be the most important element in the toolkit you develop to create sales for your work. As you can see, then, each project needs to be evaluated uniquely, and that is what we do.
Practically speaking, cover design includes the production of the front cover, spine and back cover, including the EAN bar-code required on all books that are to be sold to the public in the United States.
That is all figured into the ultimate cost of creating your cover. Our base price also includes any time required to research graphic sources such as royalty-free image libraries, etc. and the cost of such images, if any. Custom illustration, if required, is additional and will be charged at the hourly rate for the services of the graphic designer selected to complete the work.
Up to two (2) hours of revision time is also included in the base price (thereafter, revisions will be charged at the designer’s hourly rate), and the end product will be electronic cover files completely conformed to standard production requirements.
As you can see from all this, we cannot establish a firm price for the cover work on your book until we know all there is to know about you, your work, your ideas, your goals, and the marketplace for books in your genre.
And finally, there’s the designer, who will analyze your needs and provide you with a quote.
We often obtain as many as three or four quotes on complex work, so you can rest assured that you will have choices and will see samples of each designer’s portfolio.
